Merry Christmas!

We wish you a merry Christmas!  Here's a quick tour of our last two weeks.
Jacob discovers guns.
Jacob discovers Christmas lights.  Fortunately he hasn't tried eating them (yet).
Peter's been playing Christmas carols on his violin. Patrick has almost figured out Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and he really likes playing with someone else.  Of course, Patrick likes doing EVERYTHING with someone else.
Jacob discovers ornaments and un-decorates the tree
Jacobs discovers that kissing the girls is more fun than whacking them in the face.  I also caught Patrick and Mathew trying to kiss the girls next to them while the rest of us were praying at dinner!

Snowy North Dakota

Jacob's first taste of snow
Watch out for snowballs!
Mathew really likes sledding - "Pull me again Momma!"
Sleds are also a good defense...
... as well as REALLY big snowballs...
... from snowball attacks!
Don't throw snow at the camera!
Patrick rolled this ball of snow all over the yard.  Then, because Mom was tired, he decided to be the rest of the snowman.
Science experiments with Grandpa - crushing "pop" cans with cold water.
Peter blowing things up.
Grandpa blowing things up.

"That's really loud!"

November in a Blur

I made a goal of posting to the blog once a week, and I suppose I'm not doing so well.  But here's a roundup of November...

Jacob can't eat grains, so I've been creative in finding foods to fill him up.  Why not cold cubes of grits?  He loves to feed himself, and yes, I fixed them with butter and salt.  Might as well get him started right.
This poor fly fell prey to my sons and was de-winged before he was subjected to the microscope.
The frost held out for over a month later than usual, so we enjoyed our garden well into November.  But when it got our tomatillo plants, we had to pick them all at once.  Patrick and I hauled in at least 300 of them.  We gave them away, made a lot of Mexican dishes, and then got creative.  They went into mashed potatoes, soup, pizza, and straight into our mouths.
The boys also had lots of fights with rotten and/or green tomatoes after the frost.  (I have my grandfather to thank for teaching them that!)  Somehow seeds made it into the bathroom sink, and we've been getting sprouts ever since.  I'd like to think that I have such a green thumb that I can even grow tomatoes in the bathroom sink, but the truth is that it's probably an indication of my poor housekeeping.
Some time-to-go-to-bed madness.  This was quieter than usual and didn't involve any injuries.

Patrick and Mathew are both doing well writing and still think school's fun.
Cousin Shea (and Jenny) came to visit.  He sure does make a good jungle gym!
Peter excavating for treasures in his mini archaeologist kit.
One-man fetch.  He did this for over an hour straight.
We pulled out a BIG box, which became hours of entertainment as a fort, tunnel, lions' den, store, castle, and apparently a nice place to hide while you're talking on the phone.
Jacob LOVES books.  That's almost always his first choice of things to play with.
Well, I hope you enjoyed the tour through November.  I must note that Patrick does take off his "army man" shirt and let me wash it occasionally.  We're off to the Northern Hinterlands soon and will keep you posted!

Happy Birthday Patrick!

Patrick had a very green birthday - green clothes, green balloons, a green afghan, green toys, and a pumpkin pie!

Carving Pumpkins

I finally succumbed this year to the pleas for pumpkins, on the condition that I got to cook and eat them after a couple of days.
Scooping out the slimy seeds.  You can shoot them at eat other just like watermelon seeds, only these are bigger, stickier, more plentiful, and in my dining room.
In the midst of the sticky, slimy mess, Jacob discovered the roll of toilet paper.  Mom decided it was time for him to take a nap.
The finished product.  Peter's already asking when we can make pumpkin pancakes (with someone else's pumpkin, of course).
Jacob enjoyed the carving carnage for lunch.

How to Open a Birthday Present (according to Jacob)

First, play with the bubble wrap.  Try to keep your brothers from taking it away and smashing it.
"You mean this isn't my present?"
Bang on the box.  "I'm a really good drummer!"
Taste the paper.
Play with the paper.  "This isn't my present either?  Why do you keep taking away all the fun stuff?"
Taste the box.  "Not nearly as good as the paper."
Bang on the box some more.
"You mean there's something inside?  Really?"
Spend hours playing in the shipping box.  "What a great gift!"

Happy Birthday Jacob!

Jacob is enjoying his forward-facing view!

What is this stuff???
I think I need a spoon to eat it...
Well, maybe not...
